GTZ as chair of the National Sanitation Working Group
A4 vertical, 72 pages, full colour
A magazine all about.... The original instruction was: "Make sanitation sexy". The members of the national donors' working group for sanitation wanted a colourful and interesting product to celebrate National Sanitation Week. It was to be a review of the progress made since the previous year's event, while also raising the profile of the topic among as broad a public as possible.
FRESH was immense fun to produce. Working with Teresa Nannozi of GTZ (German technical cooperation), I headed a small team of journalists as 'editor-in-chief', photographer and designer. We had a tight deadline and a very wide scope to indulge our fantasies. This was reflected not only in the vibrant design of the magazine, but also the huge range of topics covered by the articles, from male circumcision and rubbish collection in Kampala, to the history of the "King's toilet-cleaning clan", the Omusu. We pulled all the strings we could to bring in local celebrity role-models, from Uganda's favourite football heros to its coolest all-girl rock band, Blu 3.
I think we were successful in reaching that "sexy" target.
